RAPID RURAL APPRAISALS

The TA team have conducted a series of Rapid Rural Appraisals (RRAs) on potential nucleus enterprises. These RRAs are conducted over periods of up to four days and entail in-depth discussions with all concerned stakeholders. RRA reports are prepared to a standard format and endorsed to the Technical Screening Committee who approve the recommendations contained in the report. Vunakanau Spices Development, ENB Arona Valley Coffee Development, EHP Sandaun Province Field Reconnaissance, EHP
Study on cardamom production in the Bainings District of East New Britain and the involvement of smallholder out growers in the production of an organically certified product. Cardamom, and other spice crops are now to be used for the extraction of essential oils. Rehabilitation needs of coffee blocks in the Arona Valley are assessed, as well as the requirements for re-opening of the coffee mill at Yonki, in order to identify a strategy for reviving the coffee industry in this part of EHP. A survey of a range of agricultural enterprises in the province to determine opportunities for further study and support, including poultry hatchery located near Vanimo, Cocoa Development in Cocoa and Eco-forestry activities in Aitape.
Mosa Poultry Hatchery, WNB Garaina Tea Production, Morobe Sihereni Coffee Plantation, EHP
Assessment of a proposed hatchery for the production of day old chicks in Kimbe to supply the needs of oil palm block holders to enable them to have an additional source of livelihood. A study on an established tea estate to determine the investment requirements for reviving the production as well as mechanisms for addressing the lack of infrastructure in the area. An assessment of a coffee plantation which has been rehabilitated by a local company and the need for the establishment of improved wet processing facilities alongside strengthening of marketing linkages.
Wasu-Kabwum Coffee Production, Morobe Cocoa/Coconut Plantation Rehabilitation, Bougainville Bee Keeping & Honey Production, EHP
A study on the production potential of arabica coffee in Kabwum district with an assessment of capacity of local coffee growers associations and the needs for improved wet processing facilities in the area. A survey of a sample of abandoned cocoa/coconut plantations along the east cost of the province to assess the extent of the need for rehabilitation and to develop mechanisms to address this. A survey of bee keeping in the province and the opportunities for an expansion of honey production assessing the investment requirements for processing facilities as well as the mechanisms for marketing,
Laloki Intensive Live Production, CP/NCD Angoram Cocoa Production, ESP Carrot Juice Production, EHP
Field Reconnaissance Visit within the Laloki catchment area of both large scale and smallholder based livestock enterprises to determine strategies and modalities for reviving the livestock industry. An assessment of the existing smallholder production of cocoa along two tributaries of the Sepik River to determine the need for support services particularly in respect of additional small-scale fermentaries and water transportation to convey cocoa beans to Angoram and by road on to Wewak. An assessment of a proposal for the production of juice produced from carrots being grown by smallholders to determine the overall investment requirements and the export marketing opportunities.
Dylup Fish Cage Farming, Madang Kamea Coffee Production, Gulf Poultry Production & Processing, EHP
A study on the production of cage-farming of barramundi using marine based pontoons that are managed by households with processing of fish by Bismark Barramundi. Assessment of the opportunity to diversify production into Cobia, Black Kingfish is also considered. A study on the existing production of Arabica coffee in the Kamea Region and an assessment of the constraints faced by smallholders in terms of the lack of processing facilities and infrastructure and recommendations on improved road access. A study of a proposed integrated poultry enterprise including hatchery, production and processing facilities and the involvement of smallholder producers to determine the overall viability of the operation.
Metlak Balsa Production & Processing, NIP Teopasino Cocoa Plantation, Bougainville Livestock Production, EHP
The commercial production of balsa wood is assessed in the south of New Ireland to determine the viability of the operation, and to compare the profitability for smallholder producer with cocoa and other exiting crops. An assessment of a cocoa plantation which is being re-purchased by a local landowners association to determine the investment requirements and to explore modalities for sourcing this funding. A survey of the past experiences if livestock enterprise in the province to determine the reasons for the decline in production and also to identify modalities for revitalising the industry.
Highlands Vanilla Production & Marketing, EHP Marketing Access for Rural Farmers, Madang TES for Improving Quality Vanilla Production, Madang
A study on the production of vanilla in the highlands and the opportunity for smallholder production, an assessment of the need for support services and marketing support. An assessment of a proposal for improved marketing of cocoa produced by smallholders in the province. A study on a small-scale enterprise involved in promoting smallholder vanilla production through providing training, propagation of planting materials and other support services to determine the investment requirement to permit an expansion of the activities.
Kobuga Cocoa and Vanilla Project, Madang Zifazing Cattle Range, Morobe Cocoa Development, Oro Prov.
Assessment of two smallholder schemes set by the PDAL to determine mechanisms for further expansion of production and for take over of management of the enterprise by the local landowners. An assessment of cattle production in the Markham Valley on Zifazing Cattle Ranch as well as other cattle raisers in the area to determine the scope for expansion of production of cattle particularly for live export. An assessment of an enterprise promoting cocoa production through the involvement of smallholders and also the need for processing facilities and marketing mechanisms.
South Fly Fisheries Development Nondugl Coffee Plantation, WHP Spices Downstream Processing, WHP
A study on a proposed fishing enterprise along the coast of Western province that involves the establishment of cold storage and processing facilities at a convenient location to which artisanal fishermen can deliver their fish. An assessment of the opportunities for redevelopment of a coffee plantation considering in particular land ownership issues and also the investment cost for rehabilitation of both wet and dry processing facilities. A study of an existing enterprise promoting smallholder production of cardamom to determine the investment needs for processing facilities and also opportunities for improved marketing.
Aitape Eco-Forestry and Conservation Project, Sandaun
An assessment of an enterprise established by the Catholic Diocese aimed at promoting smallholder medium commercial timber enterprises as an alternative to large scale commercial logging.
